After half a century of commercial welding, welding has proved in itself not injury to health. However, as in most trades, if a welder is careless some features of welding can cause discomfort and actual danger.

Essentially welding is not a hazardous occupation if proper precautionary measures are always observed. This requires continuous awareness of possibilities of danger and habitual safety precaution by the welder. In addition, it requires that the supervision be alert, responsible and tough in enforcing safety regulations.

Safety Precautions for Arc Welding

1.

Make sure your arc welding equipment is installed properly and grounded and is in good working condition.

2.

Always wear protective clothing suitable for welding.

3.

Always wear proper eye protecting, while welding.

4.

Keep your work area clean and free of hazards. Make sure that no flammable, volitile or explosive materials are in or near the work area.

5.

Do not weld in a confined space without extra special precaution.

6.

Do not weld on sealed containers that have held combustibles, without taking extra special precautions.

7.

Use mechanical exhaust at the point of welding when welding lead, Cadmium, Chromium, Manganese, Brass, Bronze, Zinc or galvanised
steels.

8.

When it is necessary to weld in a damp or wet area, wear rubber boots and stand on a dry insulated platform.

9.

Do not weld on sealed containers or compartments without providing vents and taking special precautions.

10.

If it necessary to slice length of welding cable together, make sure all electrical connections are light and insulated. Do not use with frayed,
cracked or bare spots in the insulation.

11.

When the electrode holder is not in use, hang it on brackets provided.

12.

Dispose off electrode stubs in proper container since stubs on the floor are a safety hazard.

13.

Shield other from the light rays produced by your welding arc.

14.

Do not weld near degreasing operations.

15.

When working above ground make sure that scaffold, ladder or work surface is solid.
